Finally! A Classroom Management Suite That Actually Works (And It’s Free)
Introducing SortdClass
Hey everyone,
If there is one thing every teacher knows, it’s that the administrative side of teaching can sometimes eat up more time than the teaching itself. We’ve all been there—staring at a blank seating chart, trying to remember who can’t sit next to whom, or trying to track a Socratic seminar while simultaneously facilitating it.
I wanted a better way to handle these daily tasks without juggling five different paid subscriptions or clunky apps. So, I built one.
I am thrilled to announce the launch of SortdClass, a completely free suite of classroom management tools designed to make your life easier.
What can SortdClass do?
I designed this to be a “Swiss Army Knife” for the classroom. It runs right in your browser—no downloads, no logins, and no paywalls. Here is what this version currently includes:
🪑 Smart Seating Charts: This is the flagship feature. You can build your room layout by dragging and dropping “pods” of tables. Import your roster, set specific rules (like “Student A cannot sit with Student B”), and let the algorithm automatically generate the perfect seating plan for you. You can even lock specific students in place before shuffling the rest!

💬 Discussion Mapper: Inspired by the brilliant work of Alexis Wiggins on Spiderweb Discussions, this tool visualizes your classroom dialogue. It creates a map of your students where you can click to track who is speaking, record when the discussion is getting out of hand(Chaos), and moments of silence. It draws lines between speakers to show the flow of conversation—perfect for giving students concrete data on their listening and communication skills.
🎡 Name Picker Wheel: A quick, fair, and fun way to pick students for answers or tasks.
⏱️ Classroom Timer: A simple, high-visibility timer for activities and transitions.
🎲 Dice Roller: Handy for probability lessons or gamified classroom activities.
📖 Word of the Day/Week: A fun little activity to build vocabulary with definitions and activity prompts. I wrote about my word of the week activities that were a hit with my classes in a previous post.
Why did I build this?
I wanted something clean, modern, and functional that didn’t hide essential features behind a “Pro” version. SortdClass is 100% free to use.
I Need Your Feedback!
This tool is a labor of love, and it is still in its early stages. I built it to solve my own problems, but I want it to solve yours too.
I would love for you to give it a try in your classroom this week. If you spot a bug, have an idea for a new feature, or just want to tell me how it worked for you, please reach out via the comments on social media.
Click here to try SortdClass now
I would appreciate it if you would like to give some feedback via a google forms survey too, alternatively, you can shoot me me message on Substack, or social media.
Let’s get sorted!
